a.Only a Sikh may perform kirtan in a congregation.
b.Kirtan : singing Gurbani in theprescribed Rag in the beginning of the Shabad.
c. In the congregation, kirtan only of Gurbani (GuruGranth Sahib 's or Guru Gobind Singh's hymns) and, for itselaboration, of the compositions of Bhai Gurdas Ji and Bhai Nand LalJi, may be performed.
d. It is improper, while singing Shabads from GuruGranth Sahib to rhythmic folk tunes or to traditional Ragas, or ingroup singing , to induct into them improvised and extraneousrefrains. Only a line from the Shabad should be made a refrain.
TakingHukam (Command)

a. Doing obeisance to the Guru Granth Sahib, takinga glimpse of the congregation, an embodiment of the Guru's person, andtaking the command : these constitute the view of the Satguru(Immortal destroyer of darkness, the true guru). Raising the draperycovering Guru Granth Sahib and merely taking a look or making otherstake a look at the exposed page, without taking command (reading theprescribed hymn) is contrary to Gurmat (Guru's way).
b. In the course of the congregational sessions,only one thing should be done at a time : performing ofkirtan,delivering discourse, interpretative elaboration of thescriptures, or reading of the scriptures.
c. Only a Sikh, man or woman, is entitled to be inattendence of the Guru Granth Sahib during the congregational session.
d. Only a Sikh may read out from the Guru GranthSahib for others. However, even a non-Sikh may read from it forhimself/herself.
e. For taking the command (Hukam), the Shabad thatis continuing on the top of the left hand page must be from thebeginning. If the Shabad begins on the previous page, turn over thepage and read the whole hymn from the beginning to the end. If thescriptural composition that is continuing on the top of the left handpage is a var(ode) then start from the first of the slokas precedingthe pauri and read upto the end of the pauri. Conclude the reading atthe end of the Shabad with the line in which the name 'Nanak' occurs.
f. Hukam must also be taken at the conclusion of thecongregational session or after the Ardas.

SHALOK, THIRD MEHL:

All the living beings of the world behold the True Guru. One is not liberated by merely seeing Him, unless one contemplates the Word of His Shabad. The filth of ego is not removed, and he does not enshrine love for the Naam. The Lord forgives some, and unites them with Himself; they forsake their duality and sinful ways. O Nanak, some behold the Blessed Vision of the True Guru’s Darshan, with love and affection; conquering their ego, they meet with the Lord. || 1 || THIRD MEHL: The foolish, blind clown does not serve the True Guru. In love with duality, he endures terrible suffering, and burning, he cries out in pain. He forgets the Guru, for the sake of mere objects, but they will not come to his rescue in the end. Through the Guru’s Instructions, Nanak has found peace; the Forgiving Lord has forgiven him. || 2 || PAUREE: You Yourself, all by Yourself, are the Creator of all. If there were any other, then I would speak of another. The Lord Himself speaks, and causes us to speak; He Himself is pervading the water and the land. The Lord Himself destroys, and the Lord Himself saves. O mind, seek and remain in the Lord’s Sanctuary. Other than the Lord, no one can kill or rejuvenate. O mind, do not be anxious — remain fearless. While standing, sitting, and sleeping, forever and ever, meditate on the Lord’s Name; O servant Nanak, as Gurmukh, you shall attain the Lord. || 21 || 1 || SUDH ||
